What every Canadian should know about building and boiler energy
Most Canadians don't control an industrial boiler — but the same basic ideas that make a home furnace efficient or inefficient apply at industrial scale, just with much larger numbers.
What is a boiler?
A boiler heats water or produces steam to provide space heating, hot water, or process heat for a building or facility — a core piece of equipment in most commercial and industrial sites.
Why does efficiency matter?
A less efficient boiler burns more fuel to produce the same amount of heat — that shows up directly as higher energy bills and, typically, more greenhouse-gas emissions.
What does combustion produce?
Burning fuel produces heat, plus CO2 and water vapour, and — depending on fuel, equipment, and tuning — trace amounts of CO, NOx, and other combustion byproducts.
What can maintenance change?
Regular tuning, cleaning, and combustion adjustment can measurably improve efficiency and reduce avoidable fuel use, without any equipment replacement.
What does CO2e mean?
"CO2 equivalent" converts different greenhouse gases (like methane, N2O) into a single comparable unit based on their warming effect, so totals can be added together meaningfully.
What can a building owner measure?
Fuel consumption, operating hours, stack temperature, and utility bills are all measurable today — a real baseline doesn't require new equipment to start.
Better information → better maintenance → less avoidable energy waste → lower operating costs → potentially lower emissions.
Greenhouse gases vs. local air pollution
CEEP treats these as related but distinct — reducing CO2 and reducing local air pollution are not automatically the same outcome.

CEEP is intended to help identify and reduce avoidable energy use and support better combustion/ maintenance decisions. Actual pollutant reductions depend on equipment, fuel, operating conditions and verified measurements.

CEEP is not a replacement for code compliance, manufacturer requirements, professional inspection, provincial regulation, emissions compliance, or certified testing.
